The course aims at improving students’ proficiency in a view to enable them to perform various tasks in English. Students will be given opportunity to revise language structures but the emphasis will be more on listening, speaking, reading and writing by using activities based on current issues of everyday life, their culture, and on science and technology.

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

i. The writing process : prewriting (Finding and exploring a topic, Determining purpose and audience, Brainstorming, ordering ideas, planning, drafting;

ii. The listening process of dialogues, news, short stories, radios, etc. in order to respond appropriately and critically in a wide range of situations;

iii. The structure of spoken information from peers or other sources in order to participate actively in various group discussion on topics related to current issues;

iv. The strategies used for reading various written materials strategies (e.g. Skimming, scanning)

v. The importance of grammar accuracy in order to understand and interpret written and oral information

vi. Structure and organize different types of essays in a coherent way;

vii. Produce different types of informal and formal letters in English;

viii. Produce a short and coherent essay-type summary of a long text;

ix. Listening for specific and general information, listening to casual and prepared speeches, listening to radio and/or broadcasts or recorded documentaries, listening to English speakers in various conditions;

x. Recognize and identify specific and general information from a given piece of listening and from a variety of English accents and topics;

xi. Apply different reading strategies to different text types; B.7 Express themselves with a minimum of grammatical errors
